CHAPTER EIGHTY
After sitting for a while longer, I took the key to Meganâs house from Pamelaâs key ring and left the hospital. Megan gave me her address even though I probably could have driven directly there. At least, that was how I was feeling.
Pom Pom was happy to see me. I sat on the couch for a few minutes so I could talk to and pet the Pomeranian. True to her word, a pink childâs suitcase with Barbie on the outside sat in the closet. Megan said she had it ready so she and Pom Pom could take off at a momentâs notice. It would be complete, but the treats and food might not be the freshest. They hadnât been anywhere in a while. Pom Pom was ready for a trip and did not hesitate to leave when I suggested it.
The little dog stood on my lap as I drove, her panting and slobber smearing the window as she watched the world go by.
I pulled to the curb in front of our house and parked behind a newer model Nissan Sentra. A woman sat in the driverâs seat. She was either looking at her phone or a computer because as I watched, she did not look at the house or in her mirror where she would have seen me staring at her.
Pom Pom was prepared to jump from the car as I opened the door. I scooped her up mid-leap, then got out and set her on the street. I held her leash as we walked up to the car. The woman didnât see us yet, so I picked up Pom Pom and held her at window height, then knocked on the window. The woman jumped. Pom Pom proved it didnât have to be a knock on the door or a doorbell to get her to bark an alarm. As she issued her warning, the woman leaned away as if one or both of us would come through the window and get her.
The woman opened the door as I stepped back. Pom Pom stopped barking, but her legs were moving. She may have been running.
âCaptain Phelps, how nice to see you,â I greeted her.
âHello, Daniels. How are you?â
âIâm fine. And you?â
âAlso fine.â She pointed at the dog. âWho is your little buddy?â
âThis is Pom Pom. Iâm dog-sitting for a friend.â
âThatâs very nice of you.â Phelps reached out so Pom Pom could sniff the back of her hand. âWere you expecting me?â
âNo. Should I have been?â
âNo, but I know how you are.â After getting her hand licked, she moved to petting the dog.
âYou do, donât you?â I paused. âHow is Cindy?â
âSheâs okay. Hey, wait, you shouldnât knowâ¦â
âI know. Iâm not supposed to know you work together, but I have for a while.â
âReally? How? Never mind, I know the answer.â
âBut youâve talked to her recently.â
âYes. She told me you were there to assist her. Thank you for that.â
âYouâre welcome. Sheâs your friend too, and weâd both hate to lose her.â
âYou read my mind.
