CHAPTER EIGHTY

After sitting for a while longer, I took the key to Megan’s house from Pamela’s key ring and left the hospital. Megan gave me her address even though I probably could have driven directly there. At least, that was how I was feeling.

Pom Pom was happy to see me. I sat on the couch for a few minutes so I could talk to and pet the Pomeranian. True to her word, a pink child’s suitcase with Barbie on the outside sat in the closet. Megan said she had it ready so she and Pom Pom could take off at a moment’s notice. It would be complete, but the treats and food might not be the freshest. They hadn’t been anywhere in a while. Pom Pom was ready for a trip and did not hesitate to leave when I suggested it.

The little dog stood on my lap as I drove, her panting and slobber smearing the window as she watched the world go by.

I pulled to the curb in front of our house and parked behind a newer model Nissan Sentra. A woman sat in the driver’s seat. She was either looking at her phone or a computer because as I watched, she did not look at the house or in her mirror where she would have seen me staring at her.

Pom Pom was prepared to jump from the car as I opened the door. I scooped her up mid-leap, then got out and set her on the street. I held her leash as we walked up to the car. The woman didn’t see us yet, so I picked up Pom Pom and held her at window height, then knocked on the window. The woman jumped. Pom Pom proved it didn’t have to be a knock on the door or a doorbell to get her to bark an alarm. As she issued her warning, the woman leaned away as if one or both of us would come through the window and get her.

The woman opened the door as I stepped back. Pom Pom stopped barking, but her legs were moving. She may have been running.

“Captain Phelps, how nice to see you,” I greeted her.

“Hello, Daniels. How are you?”

“I’m fine. And you?”

“Also fine.” She pointed at the dog. “Who is your little buddy?”

“This is Pom Pom. I’m dog-sitting for a friend.”

“That’s very nice of you.” Phelps reached out so Pom Pom could sniff the back of her hand. “Were you expecting me?”

“No. Should I have been?”

“No, but I know how you are.” After getting her hand licked, she moved to petting the dog.

“You do, don’t you?” I paused. “How is Cindy?”

“She’s okay. Hey, wait, you shouldn’t know…”

“I know. I’m not supposed to know you work together, but I have for a while.”

“Really? How? Never mind, I know the answer.”

“But you’ve talked to her recently.”

“Yes. She told me you were there to assist her. Thank you for that.”

“You’re welcome. She’s your friend too, and we’d both hate to lose her.”

“You read my mind.
